Determination of weapon system availability in the USAF is a continuing problem. Availability estimates drive logistic support requirements, manpower levels, and eventually the number of weapons required to meet mission requirements. After reviewing existing analytical and computer simulation models, the authors felt there was a need for a missile-specific computer simulation model based on maintainability and reliability data which would allow USAF managers to realistically estimate weapon system availability. Using the simulation language Graphical Evaluation and Review Technique for modeling Queues (Q-GERT), the authors constructed a Q-GERT network representing a tactical missile operation scenario, using existing AGM-65A/B data. The Q-GERT simulation model combines reliability and maintainability inputs and provides a comprehensive management tool for estimating availability, analyzing the impact of fluctuating logistics support levels, reliabilities, and variations in maintenance times. The concepts behind the AGM-65 availability model can be used to model a number of USAF weapon, systems with minor modifications.

A probabilistic event store computer simulation of the interactions between surface-to-air missile systems and aircraft in a non-jamming environment and over flat terrain is presented. The purpose of the model is to test the general disposition of missile areas and the associated missile system reaction times against an aircraft attack. A complete description of the model with the flow charts and CDC-FORTRAN-60 program listing is included. (Author).

The thesis presents a computer simulation aided method for predicting expenditures of a short range, semi-active homing missile system engaged in an amphibious assault. The methodology used considers varying threat size, enemy strategy, and expected missile kill probabilities. Only a single-shot firing doctrine is considered. The results obtained, displayed for varying missile kill probabilities, provide the user with expenditure information on which to base missile procurement policy. (Author).
