Humorous and heart-warming tales of English rural life centred on a traditional firm of country solicitors, perfect for fans of Rumpole of the Bailey and James Herriot. Dufty Dufty Popple & Dunn is a traditional solicitors firm in the small Midlands town of Hockam (pronounced Hokum, as the local residents are at pains to point out). This heart-warming collection of stories revolves around the lives, relationships, triumphs and failures of the good people of Hockam and of the lawyers to whom they look for help. We meet the lonely dentist and his noisy neighbours, the TV celebrity chef and his complex family, the policeman and his beloved budgies, the Vicar and the Major General, the greedy beneficiary of an uncle's will. These and many others bring their problems to Dufty Dufty Popple & Dunn to be resolved by the long-suffering and well-meaning members of the firm, all of whom have their own lives to live when time permits, from Bernard, the hapless trainee, to Hugo Dufty, the nominal senior partner. And then, of course, there are the ever-present rumours concerning Robert Popple, the former partner who departed from the firm some years previously in mysterious circumstances. The whole symphony of life portrayed here is conducted with gentle humour and charm by Hugo's father, Charles Dufty, who founded the firm 50 years ago and whose wisdom and deep understanding of the human condition help to make sense of even the most difficult and apparently insoluble problems. In this humorous and touching debut collection, Alan Hammond paints a timeless portrait of life in a rural English town. Welcome to Hockam.

Dufty Dufty Biddle & Dunn is a small firm of a provincial solicitors in the English Midland town of Hockham, catering for the legal needs of the local population. No more, no less. Charles Dufty founded the practice fifty years ago, and still acts as a consultant to his son Hugo, the senior resident partner, who has ambitions to expand the firm. The Duftys take on cases which most modern firms wouldn't even look at, yet before you know it the problem is solved. Dufty's life experience means he doesn't need to use clever legal strategies or try to outwit the opposition. In fact as far as he is concerned, there is no opposition - just people. A word here, a nod there, a small adjustment in the right place are all that is required. Most of the locals of Hockham have passed through the offices for some reason - whether a business transaction, a house sale or purchase, a dispute over a will, a neighbour dispute, a marriage break-up, or a spot of trouble with the police. They all bring their problems to Dufty, Dufty, Biddle & Dunn, which is at the very heart of village life in this typical Middle England place, brought vividly to life in Alan Hammond's stories.

This work is dedicated to map the modes of thinking and acting of legal professionals who work in white-collar crime. Lawyers, whose decisions generate economic and political consequences, stand at a strategic location between the state and key segments of society. This monograph’s approach is linked to the foundations of the sociology of knowledge, that culture antecedes and anchors social action. It starts by reconstructing the worldviews that legal professionals hold about corruption and its main participants, and then advances to examine decision-making. The author is introducing an innovative dataset comprised of interviews, court records and biographical data to investigate Brazilian lawyers (1985-2021). The study’s qualitative findings show a professional cognitive pattern that is apolitical and technical, and criticizes unskilled people working in the state administration more than businesspeople. The dominant mindset understands corporate-state relations as a self-feeding system that requires qualification and awareness of international trends to counter crime. The decision-making patterns confirm: (i) that prosecutors and judges prioritize the ends, fighting corruption, and use existing legislation and organizational resources to secure verdicts; (ii) the asymmetries between how bribe-payers and bribe-payees are treated.
