This study was conducted to assess the contribution of six-degrees- of-freedom platform motion to the training effectiveness of the Simulator for Air-to-Air Combat (SAAC) for training initial air-to-air combat skills. A transfer-of-training scheme was used. Two classes of Air Force pilots receiving initial training in the F-4 aircraft were divided into three groups. Two of the groups (eight pilots each) received training in Basic Fighter maneuvers (BFM) using the SAAC, one group using platform motion and the other group not using platform motion. The remaining group (six pilots) did not receive SAAC training. All three groups followed the same syllabus in the aircraft. Instructor pilot ratings of student performance on BFM tasks in the simulator and in four aircraft sorties for each student were collected. Analyses of Variance (ANOVAs) of ratings in the simulator were used to assess initial differences and learning effects in the simulator. ANOVAs of ratings in the aircraft were used to assess transfer of training effects. Although learning effects in both simulator and aircraft were noted, the data did not show a transfer of training effect. For the tasks investigated, SAAC trained students did not perform better than those who did not receive SAAC training. Performance differences between the Motion and No-Motion groups were negligible. Potential reasons for this non- effectiveness, and possible simulator and training program modifications for improving this training effectiveness, are discussed.

Documents an attempt to develop an objective measure for peacetime evaluation of a fighter pilot's air-to-air combat skills. Previous research and combat data from Korea and North Vietnam suggest that the skill of the individual pilot is crucial in the outcome of an aerial engagement. However, it has not been possible to estimate the actual effect or to identify what makes him superior. The Air Force cannot currently evaluate its pilots' air-to-air skills objectively during either their training or operational assignments. This report proposes four research areas that address the effectiveness and evaluation of these pilots: the selection of the prospective pilot from his undergraduate pilot training program, the air-to-air portions of his combat crew training squadron curriculum, the more efficient management of pilot resources, and an examination of the costs and benefits of dissimilar air combat training. It also proposes the development of a pilot skill index.

Above real-time training (ARTT) is an instructional strategy in which events in a training simulator occur faster than normal. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate applications of ARTT for training air combat skills and emergency procedures. Two of these experiments were conducted with experienced Air Force F-16 pilots who practiced air-to-air radar skills, air intercepts, and emergency procedures using conventional, real-time simulation or ARTT at 1.5 times real time. The pilots trained using ARTT received the same number of training trials but less clock time in the simulator as pilots trained in real time. All pilots were then tested in real time. Pilots trained using ARTT performed radar-skills tasks as well as pilots trained in real time. Pilots trained using ARTT performed emergency procedures tasks more quickly than pilots trained in real time. In a third experiment, student F-16 pilots practiced using air-to-air radar in real time or ARTT. Students trained using ARTT received more training trials in approximately the same amount of clock time as the students trained in real time. ARTT students performed better on a real-time test than students trained in real time. It is concluded that for selected tasks ARTT is more time efficient than conventional, real-time simulation because it allows more events to be experienced within a given period of training time. ARTT also supported better real-time test performance under some conditions.
