Farm income is expected to decline, probably about half as much as in 1959. Prices for farm products are likely to slip further, but sharp declines, such as those for hogs and eggs in 1959, are not expected. Supplies of farm products will re main heavy in 1960 with further ao cumulation of already excessive stocks of wheat and feed grains. Heavy sup plies will be partly offset by expected increases in exports, rising economic activity, and improved retail demand for food. But a cloud is now to be seen on the horizon - and it could spell trouble. Prices of cattle have been on a steady uptrend since December 1955, when they hit a postwar low. In that month Good feeder steers could be bought for $16 per 100 pounds. High quality feeder calves Were less than $20. Many cows sold for $10 and Choice slaughter steers for $20. Now, feeder steers are priced at $30 and steer calves at $35. Cows bring $20 and slaughter steers $30. This is a substantial increase. As in the stock market, it tends to move by fits and starts, and the combination of circum stances mentioned above resulted in a general strong upward reaction from late winter to summer. Various un certainties now overhang the speen lative markets, and the general feeling of optimism has been toned down to some extent, although a new wave may hit the markets at any time. Despite these developments, or any temporary setbacks which might occur as a result of unfavorable foreign news or domestic influences, the underlying demand factors will continue strong at least as long as the war is in its present phase, and the general trend of demand will be upward.
