This book presents the outcomes from the 2nd International Conference on Marine and Advanced Technologies 2021 (Icmat2021) which was organized by the Research and Innovation section, University Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology. The papers in this volume cover a broad spectrum of topics that represent the truly diverse nature of the field of composite materials. This collection presents research and findings relevant to the latest advances in composites materials, specifically their use in aerospace, maritime, and even land applications. The editors have made every effort to bring together authors who put forth recent advances in their research while concurrently both elaborating on and thereby enhancing our prevailing understanding of the salient aspects related to the science, engineering, and far-reaching technological applications of composite materials.

A marine engineer will need to have a broad background of knowledge within several aspects of marine design and operations. These aspects relate to the design of facilities for offshore applications and evaluation of operational conditions for marine installation and modification/maintenance works. Such needs arise in the marine industries, in the offshore oil and gas industry as well as in the offshore renewable industry. In the last 25 years, information systems have had a disruptive effect on society and business. Up until recently though, the majority of passengers and goods were transported by sea in many ways similar to the way they were at the turn of the previous century. Gradually, advanced information technologies are being introduced, in an attempt to make shipping safer, greener, more efficient, and transparent. The emerging field of Maritime Informatics studies the application of information technology and information systems to maritime transportation. Maritime Informatics can be considered as both a field of study and domain of application. As an application domain, it is the outlet of innovations originating from data science and artificial intelligence; as a field of study, it is positioned between computer science and marine engineering. This new field’s complexity lies within this duality because it is faced with disciplinary barriers yet demands a systemic, transdisciplinary approach. At present, there is a growing body of knowledge that remains undocumented in a single source or textbook designed to assist students and practitioners. This highly useful textbook/reference starts by introducing required knowledge, algorithmic approaches, and technical details, before presenting real-world applications. The aim is to present interested audiences with an overview of the main technological innovations having a disruptive effect on the maritime industry, as well as to discuss principal ideas, methods of operation and applications, and future developments. This set of two volumes comprises the collection of the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering (MARTECH 2020) that was held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 16 to 19 November 2020. The Conference has evolved from the series of biennial national conferences in Portugal, which have become an international event, and which reflect the internationalization of the maritime sector and its activities. MARTECH 2020 is the fifth of this new series of biennial conferences. The set comprises 180 contributions that were reviewed by an International Scientific Committee. Volume 1 is dedicated to maritime transportation, ports and maritime traffic, as well as maritime safety and reliability. It further comprises sections dedicated to ship design, cruise ship design, and to the structural aspects of ship design, such as ultimate strength and composites, subsea structures as pipelines, and to ship building and ship repair.
