This monograph presents a unified approach to model-based processing for underwater acoustic arrays. The use of physical models in passive array processing is not a new idea, but it has been used on a case-by-case basis, and as such, lacks any unifying structure. This work views all such processing methods as estimation procedures, which then can be unified by treating them all as a form of joint estimation based on a Kalman-type recursive processor, which can be recursive either in space or time, depending on the application. This is done for three reasons. First, the Kalman filter provides a natural framework for the inclusion of physical models in a processing scheme. Second, it allows poorly known model parameters to be jointly estimated along with the quantities of interest. This is important, since in certain areas of array processing already in use, such as those based on matched-field processing, the so-called mismatch problem either degrades performance or, indeed, prevents any solution at all. Thirdly, such a unification provides a formal means of quantifying the performance improvement. The term model-based will be strictly defined as the use of physics-based models as a means of introducing a priori information. This leads naturally to viewing the method as a Bayesian processor. Short expositions of estimation theory and acoustic array theory are presented, followed by a presentation of the Kalman filter in its recursive estimator form. Examples of applications to localization, bearing estimation, range estimation and model parameter estimation are provided along with experimental results verifying the method. The book is sufficiently self-contained to serve as a guide for the application of model-based array processing for the practicing engineer.

A design tradeoff study of a telemetry system has been conducted for application to the Ranging Array using Thin Line Array technology. The study addressed electrical and mechanical interface requirements and considered commonality with other anticipated array developments. The overall objective of the Thin Line Array program at NUSC is to develop a high performance, reliable acoustic array at moderate cost which can be deployed from a submarine or a surface vessel with a minimum of handling equipment, and which will acquire data used to detect, classify, and locate adversary submarine activity. The objective of the subject program is to perform preliminary engineering tasks to validate concepts of telemetry functions for thin line-type arrays on monolithic chips. This study is performed as a system engineering task to insure that the telemetry configuration is compatible with the overall system requirements and to provide interface and packaging information. The study results are intended to guide the actual design and breadboarding of signal conditioning and digital multiplexer functions of the telemetry unit.

In the past few years we have written and edited several books in the area of acousticandspeechsignalprocessing. Thereasonbehindthisendeavoristhat there were almost no books available in the literature when we ?rst started while there was (and still is) a real need to publish manuscripts summarizing the most useful ideas, concepts, results, and state-of-the-art algorithms in this important area of research. According to all the feedback we have received so far, we can say that we were right in doing this. Recently, several other researchers have followed us in this journey and have published interesting books with their own visions and perspectives. The idea of writing a book on Microphone Array Signal Processing comes from discussions we have had with many colleagues and friends. As a c- sequence of these discussions, we came up with the conclusion that, again, there is an urgent need for a monograph that carefully explains the theory and implementation of microphone arrays. While there are many manuscripts on antenna arrays from a narrowband perspective (narrowband signals and narrowband processing), the literature is quite scarce when it comes to s- sor arrays explained from a truly broadband perspective. Many algorithms for speech applications were simply borrowed from narrowband antenna - rays. However, a direct application of narrowband ideas to broadband speech processing may not be necessarily appropriate and can lead to many m- understandings.
