The despair and incomprehension that often seem to be the only possible response to acts of aggression and violence have led to attempts by academics and writers from a wide variety of backgrounds to understand and explain such behaviour. The concern and anxiety that is felt by many people about this subject is such that some of their accounts – notably by Konrad Lorenz, Desmond Morris, Robert Ardrey, and Anthony Storr – have become popular and even best-selling books. Originally published in 1985, Accounting for Aggression provides a comprehensive synthesis and assessment of these writings and other contemporary theory and research on aggression and violence at the time. The author presents a variety of accounts of aggression, drawing on original work in the areas of biology, sociobiology, ethology, psychology and sociology. Each account is evaluated according both to the criteria of scientific methodology and to the extent to which it illuminates our understanding and appears to have a lasting explanatory value. In the last chapter the author presents an integrative approach to the subject area which synthesizes those findings for which there appears to be substantial empirical support, within a framework of the meaning that aggressive and violent behaviour offers to those who carry it out. Accounting for Aggression will be of great value to students and practitioners in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, social work and education. Furthermore, it will be welcomed by interested members of the general public who are concerned with issues such as whether or not violence is inherent in human nature, the extent to which interpersonal violence is related to group violence, and the extent to which violence in the media affects violent behaviour.

Violent Accounts presents a compelling study of how ordinary people commit extraordinary acts of violence and how perpetrators and victims manage in the aftermath. Grounded in extensive, qualitative analysis of perpetrator testimony, the volume reveals the individual experiences of perpetrators as well as general patterns of influence that lead to collective violence. Drawing on public testimony from the amnesty hearings of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the book interweaves hundreds of hours of testimony from seventy-four violent perpetrators in apartheid South Africa, including twelve major cases that involved direct interactions between victims and perpetrators. The analysis of perpetrator testimony covers all tiers on the hierarchy of organized violence, from executives who translated political doctrine into general strategies, to managers who translated these general strategies into specific plans, to the staff—the foot soldiers—who carried out the destructive plans of these managers. Vivid and accessible, Violent Accounts is a work of innovative scholarship that transcends the particulars of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to reveal broader themes and unexpected insights about perpetrators of collective violence, the confrontations between victims and perpetrators in the aftermath of this violence, the reality of multiple truths, the complexities of reconciliation, and lessons of restorative justice.

"The Aggressive Conservative Investor will never go out of date. Regulation, disclosure, and other things may change, but the general approach and mindset to successful investing are timeless. Read this book and you will learn the rudiments of 'safe and cheap' investing. An essential read for every amateur and professional investor." --Stan Garstka, Deputy Dean & Professor in the Practice of Faculty & Management, Yale School of Management "Security analysis toward both better odds and higher long-term payoff: A readable, authoritative guide." --Professor Bill Baumol, New York University "In reading this book, one is struck by the simplicity of the ideas and the dependence of the investor on his own understandings of reality as opposed to the myths on the street. The updated version of this 1979 classic incorporates all the modern financial engineering that has occurred as a product of the late 20th century, and the new methodologies refine your abilities to measure risk but don't change the fundamentals of value. The updated version of The Aggressive Conservative Investor is very much a value-added proposition." --Sam Zell, Chairman, Equity Group Investment LLC "I concur with those people who regard Marty Whitman as the 'Dean of Value Investing.' This book is a must-read for everyone interested in understanding the art of investing." --Melvin T. Stith, Dean, Whitman School of Management, Syracuse University This no-holds-barred presentation of one of the most successful investment strategies of all time -- value investing in distressed securities/companie -- shows you how to analyze and evaluate stocks just like controlling owners. Based on the assumption that stock price rarely reflects real value, authors Whitman and Shubik use numerous case studies to present risk-minimizing methods that also provide high rewards. Still relevant today, this classic work includes a new introduction discussing the dramatic changes that have taken place in the value investing world since its first publication in 1979.

By examining two different modes of internal control and the fundamentals of risk management, this book analyses the role of internal control in financing, investment, profit distribution, and corporate strategies through China's experience. In doing so, it confirms the effectiveness and superiority of internal control over operation and management. The book compares the various internal control methods used in China and the USA, namely, operation and management-oriented versus financial reporting-oriented approaches. It also discusses the differences in corporate risk attitudes and behaviours under the two approaches. The author then proposes the hyper-correction hypothesis and the trimming hypothesis. Empirical findings regarding corporate cash policy, mergers and acquisitions, tax avoidance, and diversification strategy reveal that internal control in China does not result in undue risk aversion but instead manages enterprise risk within a reasonable capacity. These results support the trimming hypothesis and demonstrate that internal control is a useful risk management tool. The title will appeal to students, academics, and accounting professionals interested in internal control (risk management), accounting, auditing and corporate finance, regulation and governance.
