The stunning memoir of a Muslim teen struggling to survive in the midst of the Bosnian genocide--and the stray cat who protected her family through it all. *Six Starred Reviews* A YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist A Capitol Choices Remarkable Book A Mighty Girl Best Book A Malala Fund Favorite Book Selection In 1992, Amra was a teen in Bihac, Bosnia, when her best friend said they couldn't speak anymore. Her friend didn't say why, but Amra knew the reason: Amra was Muslim. It was the first sign her world was changing. Then Muslim refugees from other Bosnian cities started arriving, fleeing Serbian persecution. When the tanks rolled into Bihac, bringing her own city under seige, Amra's happy life in her peaceful city vanished. But there is light even in the darkest of times, and she discovered that light in the warm, bonfire eyes of a stray cat. The little calico had followed the refugees into the city and lost her own family. At first, Amra doesn't want to bother with a stray; her family doesn't have the money to keep a pet. But with gentle charm this kitty finds her way into everyone's heart, and after a few near miracles when she seems to save the family, how could they turn her away? Here is the stunning true story of a teen who, even in the brutality of war, never wavered in her determination to obtain an education, maintain friendships, and even find a first love-and the cat who gave comfort, hope, and maybe even served as the family's guardian spirit.

The Mahabharat--which means "the great tale of the descendants of the prince Bharata"-- is one of India's greatest religious epics and has had a profound and continuing influence upon the popular psyche of the nation. Consisting of over 100,000 couplets (about eight times the length of the Iliad and Odyssey combined), this vast epic forms the background to much of India's religious and cultural life. While there are many episodes included in the Mahabharat, the central story follows the struggles of two rival families--the Kauravas and the Pandavas--to secure control of Kurukshetra, an area northeast of modern Dehli (a conflict that has its basis in real events that probably took place before the tenth century, B.C.). In his beautiful and evocative retelling of fourteen of these classic tales, Gopal Das Khosla emphasizes the morality of love and war as presented in the epic, focusing especially on these themes as seen in the feud between the two families, a fight which culminates in the great battle of Kurukshetra. Based entirely on the ten-volume Hindi translation, Khosla underscores the narrative flow of these tales allowing unfamiliar readers to not only appreciate this fine work of literature, but to delve into the rich Indian culture that surrounds The Mahabharat.

When Battle of the Bulge veteran, Woody Wilson, realizes that Alzheimer's is about to ground him forever, he goes on the run. While the police, his wife of sixty years, and his only son search for him, a diabolical mystery man from Woody's past tracks him down and kidnaps him. He escapes his captor only to find himself facing an automatic life sentence in a criminal justice system gone haywire. Thrown into events he neither controls nor understands, he demonstrates in his last heroic battle the depth of his inner resolve never to fail those he loves. The Sickle's Compass, Stephen Woodfin's fourth novel, is a fast-paced legal thriller, a poignant story of threadbare yet resilient love, and a scathing indictment of America's refusal to make preparation for the coming tsunami: Alzheimer's Disease.

Although World War II has been over for some time, Sam Mcguire is still struggling with his memories of the brutalities of battle. Despite his pain, Sam is attempting to move forward in life. But that task is more challenging than he ever imagined as demons of the past continue to haunt him. As Sam finally gains the strength and insight to emerge from the darkness, he returns home to Indiana where he continues healing with help from family, God, and friends. After he marries his love, Sam builds a new life for himself, made complete with the birth of his children. As his son, Sammy, grows into a rebellious and headstrong young man, he too eventually makes his way to war-this time in Vietnam. Now he must find a way to survive, in his own way, in his own time, just as his father did. Reflections of Fall follows the paths of father and son as each is led from war back home where faith, family, and love strengthen their spirits to overcome pain and obstacles.
