Excerpt from A Story of Cotton The planting of cotton, usually begins, in the southern portion of the cotton producing area of the United States, as early as the last of February; and, by the last of March in the locality mentioned, the cotton is usually all planted. In the northern portion, the planting of cotton, is fairly under way in the month of April. In the southern area, under ordinary conditions, cotton matures, and picking begins, and the marketing of cotton starts, about the first of July. In the more northern latitudes, ordinarily, cotton begins to mature and starts being marketed, during the month of August. If the weather permits, the cotton markets of Texas, south ern Louisiana, southern Alabama, Georgia and southern South Carolina assume activity, and the receipts of cotton begin to be rather generous, by the first week in August. In the more northern latitudes of the cotton district, it is usually about the middle of September, before an active marketing of cotton is in evidence. The fibers after being separated from the seed are called lint, In a single pound of cotton there may be 100 million or more individual fibers. The lint cotton is pressed and packaged into bales at the gin for convenience in handling and the seed is loaded into trucks or freight cars for ship ment to oil mills. In 1972, almost cotton gins in this country were operated through a season ranging from 3 to 6 months. Many of these gins located in the high production areas operate on a 24 hour, 7-day - week basis. Modern cotton gins are equipped with improved ma chinery for drying and cleaning the seed cotton and for cleaning the lint after it is ginned and before it is packaged into bales. Excerpt from The Story of the Cotton Gin Whitney, protested against the praises of his friend, removed what hopeful expectations the most ardent may have had by calmly replying that he had never seen either cotton or cotton-seed. Mrs. Greene's Object in her friendly introduction was to attract the attention of her influential visitors to the promis ing young man whom she was befriending. The conversa tion, however, had an unexpected result. The young law student threw aside his books and soon set off for Savannah. There he wandered about the wharves, in and around the storehouses, seeking a sample of cotton. After a long search he returned with a small parcel. A workroom in the basement Of the house was set apart for his use. He made the tools necessary for his task, drew his own wire, and proceeded to construct a gin engine is the full form) for separating cotton fibre from the seeds. His pur pose was divulged to no one save Mrs. Greene. The winter of 1792-93 was nearly over when his mysterious task was fully and satisfactorily completed. Early in the spring the cotton gin was set up in a shed, and prominent planters from all over the states were invited to see it work. It was successful from the start. The machine for which there had been such a clamoring for many years was at last pro vided by the ingenuity of a Yankee student.
