Australia's first Robotics Roadmap is a guide to how Australia can harness the benefits of a new robot economy. Building on Australia's strengths in robot talent and technologies in niche application areas, the roadmap acts a guide to how Australia can support a vibrant robotics industry that supports automation across all sectors of the Australian economy. The world-leading Australian Centre for Robotic Vision, an ARC Centre of Excellence, partnered with industry, researchers and government to drive this important initiative. A national consultation process was held culminating in a series of workshops across key sectors including resources, built and natural environment, manufacturing, services (including transport & logistics), healthcare and defence.Australia has a unique opportunity to take a leading role in the development of robotic technologies and in the tech sector more generally. The roadmap demonstrates Australia's existing capability and forecasts future applications, as well as providing recommendations on harnessing the new and emerging technologies being developed in Australia today. By describing what is possible and what is desirable, the roadmap aims to create the grounds for the necessary co-operation to allow robots to help unlock human potential, modernise the economy and build national health, well-being and sustainability despite the challenges of our vast and remote geography.

The United States-Australia alliance has been an important component of the US-led system of alliances that has underpinned regional security in the Indo-Pacific since 1945. However, recent geostrategic developments, in particular the rise of the People’s Republic of China, have posed significant challenges to this US-led regional order. In turn, the growing strategic competition between these two great powers has generated challenges to the longstanding US-Australia alliance. Both the US and Australia are confronting a changing strategic environment, and, as a result, the alliance needs to respond to the challenges that they face. The US needs to understand the challenges and risks to this vital relationship, which is growing in importance, and take steps to manage it. On its part, Australia must clearly identify its core common interests with the US and start exploring what more it needs to do to attain its stated policy preferences. This book consists of chapters exploring US and Australian perspectives of the Indo-Pacific, the evolution of Australia-US strategic and defence cooperation, and the future of the relationship. Written by a joint US-Australia team, the volume is aimed at academics, analysts, students, and the security and business communities.

This book examines how global technological advances shape the way we work and allocate work today, and how we might do so in the future, exploring advances in robotics, artificial intelligence, green technology and implications for workforce skills and future welfare. It uses Australia as a case study, contrasting the country’s experience to those elsewhere. The book is a cross-disciplinary collaboration that brings together the expertise of engineers, data scientists, economists and sociologists. The reader is offered an overview of the current uses of advanced digital technologies and what it means for today’s workforce, society and economy. The book also looks to the future. Current uses of advanced technologies lag its already existing capability. The contributions note potential future applications of technology and the economic, social and workplace implications of technological change. This book should be of interest to anyone studying and wishing to better understand what work might look like in the future and how we might prepare for likely changes.

How 5G technology can support the demands of multiple vertical industries Recent advances in technologyhave created new vertical industries that are highly dependent on the availability and reliability of data between multiple locations. The 5G system, unlike previous generations, will be entirely data driven—addressing latency, resilience, connection density, coverage area, and other vertical industry criteria. Enabling 5G Communication Systems to Support Vertical Industries demonstrates how 5G communication systems can meet the needs unique to vertical industries for efficient, cost-effective delivery of service. Covering both theory and practice, this book explores solutions to problems in specific industrial sectors including smart transportation, smart agriculture, smart grid, environmental monitoring, and disaster management. The 5G communication system will have to provide customized solutions to accommodate each vertical industry’s specific requirements. Whether an industry practitioner designingthe next generation of wireless communications or a researcher needing to identify open issues and classify their research, this timely book: Covers the much-discussed topics of supporting multiple vertical industries and new ICT challenges Addresses emerging issues and real-world problems surrounding 5G technology in wireless communication and networking Explores a comprehensive array of essential topics such as connected health, smart transport, smart manufacturing, and more Presents important topics in a clear, concise style suitable for new learners and professionals alike Includes contributions from experts and industry leaders, system diagrams, charts, tables, and examples Enabling 5G Communication Systems to Support Vertical Industries is a valuable resource telecom engineers industry professionals, researchers, professors, doctorate, and postgraduate students requiring up-to-date information on supporting vertical industries with 5G technology systems.

The concept of integrated project delivery (IPD) has evolved as a result of the need for highly expert teams of people to collaborate to deliver extremely complex projects, to manage expectations about delivery speed, changes in governance standards and to take advantage of and manage expectations raised by rapid advances in technology. All this demands effective change management. This is the first Handbook to contextualise and thematically explore the concept with an emphasis on rigorous practical and theoretical validation. The Handbook is divided into five sections, each with a focus on several interconnected themes including: An introduction to IPD concepts. The foundational elements and characteristics of IPD. People, culture and collaboration as key ingredients to successful and effective IPD. Technology and process aspects of relational contracting forms such as IPD. New and relevant perspectives to IPD that have received scant attention to date. Aspects and emerging issues that are rarely consciously considered in traditional project delivery due to the commercial imperative that drives firms and client organisations. The Handbook offers both discussions of these key themes, and also in-depth research into construction and other industry project procurement and delivery that spans decades. In addition, the Handbook presents ‘best’ and ‘better’ practice, but also includes insights into cutting-edge experimental developments in technology and practices where proof of concept is currently being developed into emerging practice. Contributing authors in this Handbook collaborate with the co-editors to draw together an integrated set of chapters that align to deliver a coherent narrative of the IPD concept. It is an invaluable reference for practitioners and academics alike, and useful as core course content for numerous degree programs of study and professional development courses.
