"Cooling has produced what is sure to become the definitive scholarly account of the campaign. Drawing on a vast array of sources, including seldom-used veterans' accounts, Cooling presents a comprehensive campaign study from origins to aftermath. Not only does Cooling masterfully describe the specific movements of the opposing forces, but he also never loses sight of the wider context in which the campaign was fought. In fact, Cooling's greatest contribution may be his clear demonstration that Grant was fooled by Early's operations and took an uncommonly long time to react to a very serious threat."--American Historical Review "Cooling's superb account of one of the most dramatic ventures of the Civil War, one the peaked with a Confederate army at the gate of the nation's capital even as powerful Union forces threatened a clamp on the capital of Rebeldom . . . reflects most intensive research and provides a strictly objective account of the doings of both sides in the course of Early's thrust at Washington, from his entry into Maryland until his withdrawal back into Virginia."--Journal of Military History

During the summer and fall of 1864, Virginia's Shenandoah Valley was one of the most contested regions of the South. Federal armies invaded the Valley three times--twice they were repulsed. This book describes the third campaign, the supreme achievement of the Army of the Potomac's Sixth Corps. One of the most respected units in the Federal Army, the Sixth Corps formed the nucleus of the Federal force that spent several months competing for control of the Valley with a desperate Confederate army, resulting in some of the toughest fighting of the war. Following victories at Winchester and Fisher's Hill the Sixth Corps campaign culminated with a remarkable stand that stopped the attacking enemy and turned what began as a disastrous defeat into a spectacular victory at Cedar Creek.

In the spring of 1864, after three bloody years of civil war and with victory seemingly within reach for the Northern armies, John Brough, Ohio's energetic wartime governor, offered his state's militia for 100 days of federal service. Ordered east for duty in forts, railways, and prisons, they freed veteran troops to make the last great push against Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy. History soon overtook the Ohioans, however. They fought at Monocacy with Lew Wallace and under the watchful eye of Abraham Lincoln at Fort Stevens. They battled Mosby and other feared Southern guerrillas in Virginia and West Virginia. They fell to John Hunt Morgan's cavalry in Kentucky. They toiled and fought against thunderous Petersburg.
