Excerpt from A Practical Text-Book on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry This work is intended as a practical text-book on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, adapted to the needs of High Schools and Colleges. While considerable space has been devoted to the development of the theoretical portions of the subject, the practical applica tions of the formula have not been neglected, and in the chapters on the. Solution of Triangles will be found a carefully selected assortment of exercises and ex amples, arranged With the view of giving the student a I thorough drill in numerical computation. Chapter II. Is devoted to the functions of acute angles, the definitions being given by aid of the right triangle; a number of numerical and other exercises serve to give familiarity With them, and the usual fundamental relations are deduced. In Chapter III. The principles of the rectangular co - ordinates of a point in a plane are employed to give general definitions of the functions, applicable to angles of any magnitude, positive or negative, and the fundamental relations are proved to hold universally. Excerpt from Plane and Spherical Trigonometry IN this work the author has attempted to produce a text book which should present in a concise and yet thorough manner an adequate treatment of both the theoretical and the practical sides of elementary trigonometry. The material here presented has been gathered and tested during the course of many years of experience in the class room, and the arrange ment and method of presentation are the result of numerous experiments made for the purpose of ascertaining what could be done most effectively in the limited time usually devoted to this subject. Excerpt from Elements of Plane and Spherical Trigonometry In treatment, the endeavor has been to prepare a well graded text-book at once simple, practical, thorough, and as full in details as is consistent with the plan of the work. In deducing and exemplifying principles the author has kept steadily in view the mental training of the student, as well as his advancement in the art of trigonometric computations. Several new features will be found, notably the Trigonometric Circle (art. And the introduction of the terms opposite, adjacent, and like functions (arts. 18, 20, which it is thought will serve to crystallize the student's ideas of the functions and their relations. Excerpt from Elements of Trigonometry: With Tables This book contains, in revised form and with some additions, the material of the chapters on trigonometry found in the author's text book on Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. The theory of the subject is here presented in a manner as direct and elementary as possible, and much attention is given to the applications, which are brought out in numerous examples and exercises. These cover a sufficient range to give the student in technical courses a working knowledge of trigonometry as a tool. Great care has been taken to make the illustrations instructive, and a large amount of graphic work is called for in the exercises throughout the text. The presentation of spherical trigonometry, with applications to the terrestrial globe and to practical astronomy; has been reduced to the space of 17 pages, which will be found to contain a fair introduction to the subject. If this is to be included with plane trigonometry in a three-hour course, the work in identities and in the numerical solution of triangles should be reduced to a mini mum. Four-place tables are appended to the text, in the belief that they are sufficient for a large range of practical applications, and, be cause of their brevity, are less confusing to beginners and enable them to get results in less time than would be the case with more extensive tables. The explanation of the table of logarithms is made on the assumption that the student has no knowledge of the subject of logarithms. Answers are given to nearly all of the odd-numbered exercises. This gives the instructor the liberty of assigning exercises with or without given answers, as may seem best. For the convenience of the student a protractor is provided and will be found inside the back cover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
