A new solvent for the crop protection formulations is described. Solvents are essential components in various pesticide formulations. Many traditional solvents used in agricultural applications are currently under scrutiny because of increasing environmental and regulatory concerns. Agrochemical formulators are facing a need to find alternative solvents that are environmentally friendly while continuing to deliver traditional solvent performance. A new polar solvent, an archetype of a novel class of products containing a tertiary amide group combined with an ester function namely Methyl 5-(dimethylamino) 2-methyl 5-oxopentanoate (RHODIASOLV Polarclean) (RHODIASOLV is the registered trade mark of Rhodia, Cranbury, NJ) is described. This new solvent exhibits an outstanding safety and non toxic environmental profile. Additionally, many agrochemical active ingredients have good solubilities in this new solvent. Hansen solubility parameters demonstrate the high level of solvency properties of this ester-amide when compared to the commonly used agrochemical solvents. In addition to meeting the customer requirements on delivering good solvent performance, the raw material utilized in the manufacture of this solvent is a by-product of polyamide manufacture and has been selected to meet the sustainability criteria.

Solvents play a key role in the delivery of pesticides to their respective targets. One of the most common types of agrochemical formulation is emulsifiable concentrate (EC), which basically comprises an active ingredient (AI), a solvent or blend of solvents, surfactants, and small amounts of additives. The most common solvents present in these formulas contribute to volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, are flammable, classified as hazardous air pollutant (HAP) substances, i.e., are toxic to users and farmers, and can be phytotoxic to crops. The use of solvents that are more benign to human health and the environment is part of the "green chemistry" movement. The Principles of Green Chemistry were considered during selection and design of the new solvents described in this paper. Important features defined for these new molecules were low volatility, being derived from renewable feedstock, and low toxicity and phytotoxicity. From these studies, we present new ester solvents based on citric acid and branched alcohols derived from sugar cane. They had many desirable physical and chemical properties herein described as high boiling point, low volatility, and low freezing point. Due to their chemical characteristics, it is believed that they have low toxicity to humans and to the environment. A remarkable benefit of these products is that they do not cause eye irritation. The lab tests results showed that solubility of selected active ingredients in these esters exceed their commercial concentrations without crystallization. Based on these findings, stable EC formulations were developed using surfactants with sustainable characteristics.

Held in October of 2001 in Dallas, Texas, the symposium set out to integrate the efforts of formulation chemists, regulators, and those in industry related to sprayer and nozzle manufacture on topics related to the delivery of crop protection agents (pesticides). Sixteen contributions are presented. After the invited paper on continuity and change in U.S. federal pesticide policy, the papers are organized into two sections, first treating formulation ingredients and design, and then discussing delivery strategies. The first deals with such topics as novel polymeric dispersants, clays as microbial carriers, and Alkyl Citrate Ester surfactants. The second explores such issues as bees as delivery agents, roles of surfactants in foliar application of systemic compounds, and related topics.
