On the morning of the 1st December they began their operations by opening a heavy fire on the British lines, and directiug a furious attack on the outpost of Kemendine. This was promptly repulsed by the garrison (consisting of the 26 th Madras Native Infantry and a detachment of the Madras European Regiment) under the command of Major Yates, but it was only the prelude to a series of attacks which lasted for a week, in which the enemy sustained enormous losses without making the slightest impression.
