Assessing Site Significance is an invaluable resource for archaeologists and others who need guidance in determining whether sites are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Because the register's eligibility criteria were largely developed for standing sites, it is difficult to know in any particular case whether a site known primarily through archaeological work has sufficient 'historical significance' to be listed. Hardesty and Little address these challenges, describing how to file for NRHP eligibility and how to determine the historical significance of archaeological properties. This second edition brings everything up to date, and includes new material on 17th- and 18th-century sites, traditional cultural properties, shipwrecks, Japanese internment camps, and military properties.

Archaeological sites around the world are threatened by forces including population growth, development, urbanization, pollution, tourism, vandalism and looting. Site management planning is emerging as a critical element not only for the conservation of this heritage, but also to address issues such as tourism and sustainable development. This book reports on the proceedings of a workshop held in Greece, where an international group of professionals gathered to discuss challenges faced by archaeological sites in the Mediterranean and to examine management planning methods that might generate effective conservation strategies.

"The intent in providing this guidance is to (1) demonstrate that historical archeological properties are important and worthy of evaluation and preservation; (2) promote and facilitate the submittal of historical archeological nominations; (3) improve the National Register as a representative inventory of this nation's significant cultural resources (currently, less than three percent of the National Register properties are recognized for their historical archeological values); and (4) encourage local, state, and federal project and landuse planners to recognize the significance of these kinds of cultural resources"--Page iii.

A collection of reports on the situation of urban archaeology in 22 European countries. All the reports of the situation in the seperate countries give amongst others attention to definitions of urban archaeology, to previous research, databases, maps and evaluation techniques in the field, to the legal framework, financial support and numbers, status and qualifications of those who work in urban archaeology, to the balance between preservation and use, the contribution of urban archaeology to education and the understanding of the historic environment. The book is the result of decisions made during the 3th International Conference of Ministers responsible for the cultural heritage, held in Malta in 1992, where the revised European Convention on the protection of the Archaeological Heritage was signed. To promote the implementation of this convention the ministers recommend a number of actions which together might form a 'European Archaeology'. This handbook was one of those actions.
