O presente trabalho representa um importante item no processo de construção da Educação Ambiental no Brasil. Ele é, ao mesmo tempo, a finalização de uma primeira etapa de esforços conjuntos das autoras, da Coordenação de Educação Ambiental do Ministério da Educação e muito especialmente dos inúmeros multiplicadores de Educação Ambiental formados ao longo do país, nos anos de 1996 a 1998 e o início de novos momentos para a prática da Educação Ambiental e para a implementação dos temas transversais nos currículos escolares do ensino básico, em coerência com os princípios objetivos e atividades estabelecidos nos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais e com as novas Diretrizes Curriculares do Ensino Médio Brasileiro. Apresenta uma metodologia para a formação de recursos humanos em Educação Ambiental na procura de responder aos complexos desafios da realidade contemporânea.
