The Civil War in the west has gotten far less attention than the eastern theater. Yet some of the most decisive battles were fought there by some of the most famous soldiers and regiments of the war. The Second Michigan Cavalry was one of them, fighting under Phil Sheridan, Gordon Granger, and others. The author of this work was an aide to General Sheridan. At Shiloh, Corinth, Nashville, Franklin and other fights, Marshall Thatcher was there and as regimental historian, he gives you both a broad and personal view of his highly-praised Michigan comrades-in-arms. Don't miss this important and exciting view of a theater of war that many don't study.

This is a rare book of keen observation, respect, and in some instances even affection for Native Americans of his time. (It's a good bet his editor or the marketing department had something to do with the language.) General Oliver O. Howard commanded Union forces in the American Civil War and lost his right arm at the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862. After recovery, he continued in important commands, including the Army of the Tennessee. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. For nine years after the Civil War, he was commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau and worked to integrate free African Americans into southern society. Howard was also a leader in promoting higher education for freedmen, most notably in founding of Howard University in Washington and serving as its president 1867–73. He accepted the surrender of the famous chief Joseph, and led campaigns and negotiations with an astonishing number of the western tribes. No student of the Indian Wars in the United States should miss reading this book. One of the legendary figures of the frontier U.S. Army and the Indian Wars, Sandy Forsyth is unknown to most Americans. This volume contains his exciting account of the Battle of Beecher Island in September, 1868. Forsyth commanded a tiny force pinned down on a sand bar in the Republican River for nine days against hundreds of Cheyenne warriors led by Roman Nose. Forsyth was badly wounded but stayed in command as men and horses fell around him. Earlier in his career, he had been an aide-de-camp to Major-General Phil Sheridan during the Civil War. He rode with Sheridan on his famous nighttime ride from Winchester to avert catastrophe at the Battle of Cedar Creek. That story is here, as well as Forsyth's memory of his presence at the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. This is one of the most exciting and well-written memoirs of an officer who served in the Civil War and on the frontier. According to James Lloyd, the 1856 publisher of this guide, "The price of this volume is so small, that every man, woman and child, should have a copy for reference..." However true that may have been, they might not have wanted to refer to it while ACTUALLY RIDING ON A STEAMBOAT. The largest portion of the book is taken up with detailed accounts of horrific steamboat accidents involving boiler explosions, collisions with other ships, capsizing, and damage from river detritus. In one instance he records a conflagration that consumed twenty-three steamboats in New Orleans in 1849. It reads extremely well and a modern equivalent might be 1955 classic, "A Night to Remember" about Titanic, only with scores of wrecks instead of one. In some of the cases, criminal charges were brought against crew members for negligence or because they blew up a boiler while racing another steamboat while carrying 300 passengers. It makes fascinating reading of an era long gone and Lloyd did a very creditable job of cataloging scores of accidents. Why he felt this would be appropriate reading for children while traveling is something we can never know. John Woodhouse Audubon was the son of the famous naturalist, John James Audubon, and was a respected naturalist and painter in his own right. In 1849, he journeyed out to the American West and Mexico. He describes early California and the Gold Rush of '49. Audubon took notes of scenes and occurrences by the way. In his descriptions he exhibits the keen observation of the naturalist and the trained eye of the artist. The result is a remarkable picture of social conditions in Mexico, of birds and trees, of sky and mountains and the changing face of nature, of the barrenness of the desert and the difficulties of the journey, of the ruined missions of California, of methods of mining, and of the chaos of races and babel of tongues in the gold fields. It was Audubon’s intention to rewrite his notes and to publish them. One part was printed privately and given to a few friends but distractions at home prevented the completion of the work.
