Of works relating to Africa as a whole and general books of reference the following, in par ticular, have been consulted: Mr. A. H. Keane's Africa, in the new issue of Stanford's Compendium; Dr. W. Sievers's Afrika, published by the Leipzig Bibliographical Institute; Mr. Keltie's Partition of Africa, and Statesman's Year-book for 1896; Mr. A. Silva White's Development of Africa, with the series of maps by Mr. Ravenstein; Mr. G. G. Chisholm's Handbook of Commercial Geography, and Longman's Gazetteer; and Mr. Keane's Ethnology in the Cambridge Geographical Series; while for the chapter on the Sahara M. Excerpt from A Regional Geography of Africa and Europe, Vol. 3 This book is the third of a series of four intended to cover the geography course of a Secondary School for the four years leading up to and including the year in which an examination of matriculation standard is taken. The Americas were taken in the first book, and Asia and Australia in the second, leaving Africa and Europe as the continents for study in the third year. Thus each year's work includes a continent in both northern and southern hemispheres, an arrangement which facilitates the abundant use of comparison and contrast. The British Isles are rather fully treated, and this is done deliberately in order to lighten the work of the succeeding year. Indeed, one great advantage of the arrangement of the continents adopted in this series is that the pupils have covered the whole field of regional and general geography at the end of the year prior to that in which they would normally sit for a First Public Examination, i.e. an examination of matriculation standard. In that year they have, therefore, abundant time to revise the whole without recourse to cramming. There may be some criticism of the wisdom of publishing a book on Europe at a time when the new frontiers of many European States have not been fixed. The publication of this volume has been much delayed on that account, but the demand for its appearance is so insistent that it has been decided to issue it without further delay. Excerpt from A First Geography of South Africa This book of South African Geography has been written for children of Standards III or IV. It meets the requirements for Standard III laid down in the new Geography Syllabus of the Transvaal Education De partment; and it will also be found suitable for the work of Standard IV in the Cape Province and Natal. Naturally, there has been no attempt to make the book a complete treatise on the geography of the Union of South Africa, its neighbours and dependencies; but it is hoped that it will be found to cover the ground with sufficient fullness for beginners.
