The 50 Etudes by Boris Grigoriev are inspiring and diverse examples of romantic etude writing. Originally written for tuba, they are transposed and adapted for tenor and bass trombone by Randall Hawes, bass trombonist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mastering the use of alternate positions is a crucial building block to developing excellent slide technique leading to a smooth and beautiful legato sound. The common sense use of the valves-and slurring while using the valves-are essential skills. Mr. Hawes offers instructive text and musical examples to achieve these goals.

These are the only etudes Grigoriev composed specifically for tuba. They are very musical with a distinctive Russian style. Grigoriev makes use of every major and minor key, legato and marcato styles, and wide range. Although conceived for BBb tuba, these etudes work well for all tubas including CC, F and Eb. With instructive text by L. Keating Johnson, additional text and musical examples by Wesley Jacobs, Grigoriev 50 Etudes is a comprehensive book for tubists.

These etudes transcribed from the vocalises of Bordogini have been specially prepared for use by the trombonists, to perfect their technic generally and in particular to develop style in the interpretation of melody in all its varied forms of expression.
