About the publication It is with great joy that I, along with the editorial committee, present to you, reader, the 2017 Pretoria Student Law Review. On this journal’s 11th edition, it has been an expansive year with a wider variety of topics being researched and produced by our authors. As law students, young scholars and future legal practitioners, we have a duty to utilise the unique position that we are in to challenge the status quo. Fittingly, the topics covered prove themselves to be contemporary and legally pertinent and encourage critical thinking of the law and its place in South African society. This year has not only been a challenging one for students, staff and parents but also for the citizens of South Africa as a whole. It is thus with even greater pleasure that we offer our humble contribution to legal academia. Every year of publication faces its own challenges, and this year was no different. However, it is through setbacks and ambitious deadlines that which makes a finalised product that much more deserved. This year’s edition touches on a variety of themes which is certain to pique anyone’s interest. This year’s edition of the PSLR would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of a particularly motivated and dedicated team. This book gathers selected research papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Communication and Intelligent Systems (ICCIS 2022), organized by the National Institute of Technology, Delhi, India, during December 19–20, 2022. This book presents a collection of state-of-the-art research work involving cutting-edge technologies for communication and intelligent systems. Over the past few years, advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning have sparked new research efforts around the globe, which explore novel ways of developing intelligent systems and smart communication technologies. The book examines institutional innovation in urban regeneration in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, three Chinese cities that have experienced sweeping changes in recent years, providing an ideal guide to the development of urban regeneration practices in China. As a starting point, the book revisits relevant theoretical developments and the institutional experiences of urban regeneration in some Asian pioneer cities and regions, such as Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo, and Singapore. Moving on to the Chinese mainland cities themselves, the core comparative study investigates the institutional systems, key policies, planning formulations, and implementation paths in the urban regeneration process of the three cities. Gains and losses that have resulted from each city's institutional construction and reformation are discussed, as well as the underlying reasons for these. Drawing on these case studies and comparisons, the book puts forward some generic rules for urban regeneration institutional innovation, offering a valuable frame of reference for other cities and regions. The book will appeal to scholars interested in urban regeneration and renewal, as well as urban planners, architects, policymakers, and urban development administrators.

The term 'learning analytics' is defined as the measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of information about learners and their contexts for the purposes of understanding and optimizing learning. In recent years learning analytics has emerged as a promising area of research that trails the digital footprint of the learners and extracts useful knowledge from educational databases to understand students’ progress and success. With the availability of an increased amount of data, potential benefits of learning analytics can be far-reaching to all stakeholders in education including students, teachers, leaders, and policymakers. Educators firmly believe that, if properly harnessed, learning analytics will be an indispensable tool to enhance the teaching-learning process, narrow the achievement gap, and improve the quality of education.
