This report traces the flow of Californias 2000 timber harvest through the wood-using industries; provides a description of the structure, operations, and condition of Californias primary forest products industry; and briefly summarizes timber inventory and growth. Historical wood products industry changes are discussed, as well as trends in harvest, production, and sales. Employment and worker earnings in the states forest products industry also are examined, and an industry leaders assessment of past and future operating conditions is provided.

Scott Prudham investigates a region that has in recent years seen more environmental conflict than perhaps anywhere else in the country--the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Prudham employs a political economic approach to explain the social and economic conflicts arising from the timber industry's presence in the region. As well, he provides a thorough accounting of the timber industry itself, tracing its motivations, practices, and labor relations.

More than 1,200 sawmills produce the bulk of U.S. and Canadian softwood lumber. The maps and tables in this report show the location and size of these mills by State and Province. Analysis of timber inventories in relation to use shows a close correspondence between pricing and use intensity. In some Southern States, the intensity of use is approaching recent growth levels, but the adoption of more intensive management coupled with maturing of large areas of newly established forests should increase supply over the next two decades.

Primary wood-using industries in Saskatchewan were surveyed by telephone in 1999. This directory gives a summary for each operation. Information is provided on mill production, products, wood supply, species utilized, employment generated, and markets. Sawmills, wood treating plants, log home builders, commercial fuel-wood producers and the pulp, paper, oriented strandboard, and plywood mills are grouped by industry type, size of operation, and ecoregion.
