This open access book highlights the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of vehicle systems dynamics and control, as presented by leading international researchers at the 16th JSAE International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control (AVEC), held at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, on September 2-6, 2024. It covers a diverse range of topics such as vehicle dynamics theory, steering, brake, tire, suspension, chassis control, powertrain, electrified vehicles, stability enhancement systems, driver-vehicle systems, advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving systems, driving simulator dynamics and control. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, present a wealth of exciting ideas that will open novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaboration among different specialists.

The AVEC symposium is a leading international conference in the fields of vehicle dynamics and advanced vehicle control, bringing together scientists and engineers from academia and automotive industry. The first symposium was held in 1992 in Yokohama, Japan. Since then, biennial AVEC symposia have been established internationally and have considerably contributed to the progress of technology in automotive research and development. In 2016 the 13th International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control (AVEC’16) was held in Munich, Germany, from 13th to 16th of September 2016. The symposium was hosted by the Munich University of Applied Sciences. AVEC’16 puts a special focus on automatic driving, autonomous driving functions and driver assist systems, integrated control of interacting control systems, controlled suspension systems, active wheel torque distribution, and vehicle state and parameter estimation. 132 papers were presented at the symposium and are published in these proceedings as full paper contributions. The papers review the latest research developments and practical applications in highly relevant areas of vehicle control, and may serve as a reference for researchers and engineers.

This book presents the latest advances and research achievements in the fields of autonomous robots and intelligent systems, presented at the IAS-16 conference, conducted virtually in Singapore, from 22 to 25 June 2021. IAS is a common platform for an exchange and sharing of ideas among the international scientific research and technical community on some of the main trends of robotics and autonomous systems: navigation, machine learning, computer vision, control, and robot design—as well as a wide range of applications. IAS-16 reflects the rise of machine learning and deep learning developments in the robotics field, as employed in a variety of applications and systems. All contributions were selected using a rigorous peer-reviewed process to ensure their scientific quality. Despite the challenge of organising a conference during a pandemic, the IAS biennial conference remains an essential venue for the robotics and autonomous systems community ever since its inception in 1986.
