Framed in a lucid discussion of the intellectual issues surrounding the postmodern movement, the essays in this book re-examine the course of twentieth-century art through the work of twenty-five major sculptors. McEvilley masterfully traces the evolution of modern sculpture from the readymades of Marcel Duchamp to the anti-painting statements of the 1960s to the spiritualism and conceptualism of the 1980s and 1990s. This is a groundbreaking work in the field of art criticism and a fundamental text for anyone interested in the history of current art and culture. "Examining major works in the light of recent critical and theoretical perspectives, this book also considers the extent to which Arp's resistance to single, reductive interpretations may be linked to his bilingual, bicultural upbringing in Alsace and his experience of two world wars."--BOOK JACKET.

In the heroic tradition of Michelangelo and Rodin, Donald DeLue's (1897-1988) monumental sculpture adorns such sites as Valley Forge ( Washington at Prayer ) and Gettysburg ( Peace and Memory ). His 45-foot-high Rocket Thrower soared above the 1964 NewYork World's Fair, symbolizing humanity's conquest of outer space. Less well known to the public than Paul Manship, whose assistant he briefly was, DeLue receives a fitting tribute in this biography/critical study, the first monograph on the artist. Howlett, president of Childs Galleries in Boston and New York, knew DeLue well and seems attuned to the sculptor's traditionalist blend of classical myth, national symbolism and spiritualized personification of emotions. Fiery and primal, DeLue's most original work reaches beyond the spring of classical perfection to tap archaic Greek and Minoan sources.

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Sculpture Society, this important history traces America's rich heritage of figurative sculpture from the Columbian exposition of 1893 to the present. Illustrated with outstanding examples of American figurative sculpture of the last century, this volume begins with an analysis of the influence of the Beaux-Arts tradition on the creation of the great public monuments of the young republic. With this background, the book moves on to survey important categories of sculpture chronologically. Equestrian monuments and countless tributes to war heroes are surveyed in one category. In another important grouping, author David Martin Reynolds surveys portrait sculpture. He also includes a section on medallic art, a category usually neglected in sculpture surveys. In another innovation, Dr. Reynolds devotes a chapter to American Indians, both as widely favored subjects for sculpture and as sculptors themselves. Not neglecting genre, the author deals extensively with the large group of sculptors who concentrated on animals. Finally he surveys the figurative tradition in the twentieth century and speculates on future trends in sculpture. Donald Martin Reynolds teaches at the School of Architecture, Columbia University, in New York City and is the author of many articles and books on sculpture, including Monuments and Masterpieces, which was favorably reviewed in the New York Times Book Reviews. 210 illustrations
