From February 1977 to present, the Museum of New Mexico has photographically recorded and cataloged the peteroglyphs at the Waterflow Site (LA 8970) west of Farmington, New Mexico, under contract with the New Mexico State Highway Department. This first comprehensive recording of the petroglyphs was initiated to determine the impact of various proposed realignments of U.S. 550. Analysis of the art was oriented toward defining cultural sources where possible, as well as general time of manufacture through association with the cultural diagnostics. An archeological history of the area, including use of the cliffs as temporary shelter, is also considered.
