Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 6 He appears to have conceived the project of writing his history, immediately upon his settling at Rome; or, perhaps, he came thither for the purpose of collecting the necessary materials for that great work. Augustus appointed him preceptor to his grandson Claudius, afterwards emperor. But he seems not much to have attended to the advantage which might have resulted from so advantageous a connection, and to have occupied himself, entirely, in the composition of his history; parts of which, as they were finished, he read to Augustus and Macanas. Excerpt from Livy's History of Rome, Vol. 1: The First Five Books Though thus commissioned and paid for by the king, it is improbable that the work was ever much in request, and only two copies of it seem to be preserved. F ortun ately one of these is excellent, and its slight defects are so well supplemented by the other, that it is possible to give a text which is practically complete, and of which the correctness can seldom be called in question. Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1 Mediterranean on the west, and the narrow one on the east and in the close vicinity of the latter they attain their greatest elevation, which, however, scarce reaches the line of perpetual snow, in the Abruzzi. From the Abruzzi the chain continues in a southerly direction, at first undivided and of Considerable height; after a depression which forms a hill-country, it splits into a somewhat attened succes sion of heights towards the south-east, and a more rugged chain towards the south, and in both directions terminates in the formation of narrow peninsulas. Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1: Books I.-XX There have been several previous translations of our author, but the only one now before the public, or deserv ing of particular mention, is that by Baker, which is um doubtedly a very able performance, and, had it been more faithful, would have rendered any other unnecessary. The edition used for the present translation is that pub lished at Oxford under the superintendence of Travers Twiss, whose carefully-revised text is by far the 'best ex tant. The few notes and illustrations which the limits of an edition in this popular form permit are chiefly confined to the explanation of grammatical difficulties. Historical and antiquarian illustration is now so abundantly supplied by excellent Manuals and Dictionaries, that it has been deemed unnecessary to swell the present volumes by ad ditions in that department. Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 4 In calculating the corresponding years, the year I of the City has been assumed as identical with the year 753 n.c., and with Olymp. 6, 4; although, if we take into account the circumstance that the Roman solar year began with the 1st day of March, and the Greek with the 1st day of July, the year 1 of the City would according to more exact cal culation correspond to the last ten months of 753 and the first two months of 752 s.c., and to the last four months of 01. 6, 3 and the first eight of O]. 6, 4.
