Let me quote a few of them; Experiment III. - Irritation of the brachial plexus caused first, a rise in blood-pressure, followed, after continued severe irritation, by a marked and persistent fall. Autopsy showed the heart and arteries empty and the veins full. Experiment IV. - Crushing the feet caused a great rise in blood pressure. Tearing the brachial plexus and crushing the testes caused a great fall in pressure. Experiment V. - Violence to the feet and brachial plexus caused fluctuating pressure; then opening the abdomen caused a marked fall. Which continued. Autopsy; left ventricle empty, in systole; right ventricle contained some blood. The veins were full, the splanchnic no more SO than the somatic. I have removed such a gall-bladder, measuring seven inches in length and one and one-half inches in diameter, in which the walls were as thin as tissue paper. Excerpt from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, Vol. 77: January-June, 1918 ON February I 5, 1897, over twenty years ago, I began my connec tion with the Sloane Hospital for Women, then the Sloane Maternity Hospital. At that time women had no advice during their pregnan cies, little skill in the management of their labors, and practically no care during their puerperium. Some of the medical students saw a few cases delivered during their medical-school days, while all were totally unfit to practice obstetrics after their graduation. Of course, there were a few competent physicians to deliver women, but the rank and file were an ignorant lot, while such a man as a surgical obstetrician did not exist. The development of such men was in progress but along lines quite different from the modern ideas Of to-day. The instrument relied upon then to terminate dystocia was the forceps. Another Operation frequently employed to help one out of a difficulty was a version. Physicians had to be skilful at both of these operations for a successful outcome, because in the hands Of bunglers a tremendous amount of harm could be done. On December 21, less than three months later, Garrigues, in re porting the result of his work, was able to say: The effect of the treatment has been wonderful. As if by magic all trouble disappeared. Ninety-seven women have been delivered since its introduction and not only has none Of them died, but there has scarcely been any disease among them - only three had any rise of temperature. The pavilions are scarcely recognizable. Where we used to have offensive odors, feverish, prostrated, or despair ing patients, overworked nurses, and despondent doctors, the air is pure, the patients look well, their temperatures are normal, the nurses are cheerful, and the doctors happy. Could there be a greater triumph than this? Was ever greater lesson taught more quietly? What battle of the greatest general of the world's red fields was ever fraught with consequences more momentous?
