Preliminary results on searches for new particles beyond the Standard Model are presented. The data were taken by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab {bar p}p collider at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. Limits on the masses of the gluino and squark in a minimal supersymmetric theory are given. The 90% confidence level asymptotic lower mass limits on each are 150 GeV/c2. A special data run was taken to search for the diffractively produced sextet quark state?6. An?6 with a mass larger than 20 GeV/c2 is excluded at the 95% confidence level. Limits are also set on the pair-production of massive stable charged particles. Unit-charged particles belonging to spin 1⁄2 color triplets with masses between 50 and 139 GeV/c2 are ruled out at the 95% confidence level as are charge 2/3 particles with masses between 50 and 116 GeV/c2 and charge 4/3 particles with masses between 50 and 140 GeV/c2. 5 refs., 3 figs.

The authors report on the first results from the CDF experiment on search for physics beyond the Standard Model using data from the upgraded TeVatron collider running p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1960 GeV. These first results, although obtained with a total integrated luminosity lower than the total integrated luminosity collected during Run I, are already competitive if not better, due to the increase in the center of mass energy and the improved detector capability.

One of the fundamental roles of a general purpose detector exploring, by means of increasing luminosity, higher and higher mass reach, is to search for new particles and exotic phenomena. This is a continuing effort for the CDF collaboration, and will report on several searches using about 20 pb−1 from the 1992/93 run labelled {open_quotes}run 1a{close_quotes} and (approximately)50 of the 90 pb−1 so far from the current {open_quotes}run 1b.{close_quotes} These are mostly preliminary analyses, typically using a total of 70 pb−1. Our limits on SUSY using missing E{sub T} with jets as well as three leptons are discussed elsewhere; results from the D0 collaboration are similar. I will discuss searches for additional vector bosons Z(prime) and W(prime), second generation scalar leptoquarks, as well as a broad search for objects decaying into jet pairs, including b-tagged jet pairs. I will also describe two events which do not fit in comfortably with either the standard model or a phenomenologically motivated search.

We present recent results of searches for new particles beyond the Standard Model at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). These include searches for heavy gauge bosons (Z(prime), W(prime)), leptoquarks and stable massive charged particles. For most of these particles we set the currently most stringent limits. 15 refs., 7 figs.

We present three searches for new particles at CDF. First, using 70 pb[sup[minus]1] of data we search the dijet mass spectrum for resonances. There is an upward fluctuation near 550 GeV/c[sup 2] (2.6[sigma]) with an angular distribution that is adequately described by either QCD alone or QCD plus 5% signal. There is insufficient evidence to claim a signal, but we set the most stringent mass limits on the hadronic decays of axigluons, excited quarks, technirhos, W[prime], Z[prime], and E6 diquarks. Second, using 19 pb[sup[minus]1] of data we search the b-tagged dijet mass spectrum for b[bar b] resonances. Again, an upward fluctuation near 600 GeV/c[sup 2] (2[sigma]) is not significant enough to claim a signal, so we set the first mass limits on topcolor bosons. Finally, using 67 pb[sup[minus]1] of data we search the top quark sample for t[bar t] resonances like a topcolor Z[prime]. Other than an insignificant shoulder of 6 events on a background of 2.4 in the mass region 475--550 GeV/c[sup 2], there is no evidence for new particle production. Mass limits, currently in progress, should be sensitive to a topcolor Z[prime] near 600 GeV/c[sup 2]. In all three searches there is insufficient evidence to claim new particle production, yet there is an exciting possibility that the upward fluctuations are the first signs of new physics beyond the standard model.

It has been more than a decade since new elementary particles were discovered. To recognize the findings of scientists in this still fairly new but exciting and promising area of research, the Trieste Workshop was organised in May 1992 to discuss the status and explore the prospects for the discovery of new elementary particles using the full variety of search methods which are, or will be available to the physicist. All papers in this collection of proceedings are reviews written by experts in their own area of speciality. Many review papers based on experimental findings are also included. To present a clearer and more coherent overview, a theoretical overview talk as well as a summary talk have been included to serve as a link between the various areas that were discussed in the papers. This collection of papers is perhaps the first authoritative source ever published on the search for new elementary particles.
