The field trip turns upside down when the professor and one of Miss Pepper’s students are captured by Chief Pontiac’s warriors. The two are lost in time and their only hope rests in the hands of Miss Pepper and her students. The class has to follow the professor’s clues and research the past in order to bring their friends home, but time is running out. Can they find the answers that will help them rescue their friends before one of the major battles of Pontiac’s war?

How is academia portrayed in children's literature? This Element ambitiously surveys fictional professors in texts marketed towards children, who are overwhelmingly white and male, tending to be elderly scientists. Professors fall into three stereotypes: the vehicle to explain scientific facts, the baffled genius, and the evil madman. By the late twentieth century, the stereotype of the male, mad, muddlehead, called Professor SomethingDumb, is formed in humorous yet pejorative fashion. The idea for The Runaway Garden came to Schatzer when he heard the staggering statistics of runaways in the United States today.
