Miss Pepper’s class is going on a field trip to the local university. Once there, they meet the curious Professor Tuesday, the inventor of the Tuesday Teleporter and an expert on the famous Native American war chief Pontiac. The students see firsthand the native people of the Woodland Tribes, the French, the British, and the events that led up to Pontiac’s War. The field trip turns upside down when the professor and one of Miss Pepper’s students are captured by Chief Pontiac’s warriors. The two are lost in time and their only hope rests in the hands of Miss Pepper and her students. The class has to follow the professor’s clues and research the past in order to bring their friends home, but time is running out. Can they find the answers that will help them rescue their friends before one of the major battles of Pontiac’s war?

"In the mid-eighteenth century, the Ottawa chief Pontiac (often spelled Ponteach at the time) led an intertribal confederacy in resisting British power in the Great Lakes region, an event immortalized in the play Ponteach, or the Savages of America. This play, written by infamous frontier soldier Robert Rogers, is one of the earliest theatrical renderings of the region, depicting its hero in a way that called into question eighteenth-century constructions of Indigenous Americans. Sämi Ludwig contends that Ponteach's literary and artistic merits are worthy of further exploration. He investigates the questions of authorship and analyzes the play's content, embracing its many contradictions as enriching windows into the era. In this way, he suggests using Ponteach as a tool to better understand British imperialism in North America and the emerging theatrical forms developing in the Young Republic"--

How is academia portrayed in children's literature? This Element ambitiously surveys fictional professors in texts marketed towards children, who are overwhelmingly white and male, tending to be elderly scientists. Professors fall into three stereotypes: the vehicle to explain scientific facts, the baffled genius, and the evil madman. By the late twentieth century, the stereotype of the male, mad, muddlehead, called Professor SomethingDumb, is formed in humorous yet pejorative fashion. This Element provides a publishing history of the role of academics in children's literature, questioning the book culture which promotes the enforcement of stereotypes regarding intellectual expertise in children's media. This title is also available, with additional material, as Open Access.

The idea for The Runaway Garden came to Schatzer when he heard the staggering statistics of runaways in the United States today. With one in seven children running away at some time in their young lives, Schatzer wanted to tell a story that could open discussion in a positive light about what could happen if a child left home. When he sat down to think of who could do the running away and what situations could develop, vegetables came to mind, using their names with homonyms and puns. Allthe green peas split for town; the tomatoes stewed and stirred. Celery and her friend sweet corn stalked off without a word. What made the snap beans snap? How did the berries get into a jam? What happened to the cauliflower's head? Read along as Grandpa spins a tale about the night that all the plants in the garden get up and run away. At first they think running away is fun, but it isn't long before things go terribly wrong.
