Excerpt from A Course of Practical Physics for Students of Science and Engineering: Part I, Fundamental Measurements and Properties of Matter; Part II, Heat A collection of diagrams and engravings is placed at the end of the book so that the student can illustrate his laboratory reports without the labor of making drawings. A few pieces of apparatus, experimental methods, and proofs have been given that may possess some novelty, although the fixed purpose has been to use the standard classical forms except in such cases where a trial of not less than a year by a class of one hundred or more students has demonstrated the superiority of the proposed innovation. Excerpt from Notes on the Properties of Matter and Heat The following Lecture Notes have been privately printed for the use of students taking sophomore Physics in the University of California. Students cannot be too often reminded that they cannot really learn the principles of Physics unless they become acquainted with them at first hand from daily experience or from individual or lecture experiments; text-books are merely guides to the use of such material. They are very necessary guides, however, for without them it would be impossible for any one person to properly classify, coordinate, and interpret his knowledge, to fill the gaps in his experience, or to get a proper perspective view of the whole subject. In reading, however, do not in any case try to recall the statements as given in the book. See, if you can, the thing or the phenomenon to which your attention is called by'it, and try to remember what your own eyes have seen; if that is impossible, try to form a mental picture of the thing or the phenomenon, not of the words of the book. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Heat In this work the Author has endeavoured to place before his readers in an elementary form the facts and principles of the Science of 'Heat, ' and also to give some of the most prominent practical applications of our knowledge of this subject. His object has been to begin with the study of well-ascertained facts and to proceed onwards to general principles. Accordingly, the work has been divided into three parts; the first of which embraces the study of the various effects produced by heat upon bodies. In this part many of the most recent investigations, as well as the apparatus used in conducting them, are described at length, while numerical examples are given, which, it is hoped, may enable the student to attain to the accuracy needful in physical research. The second division contains the laws which regulate the distribution of heat through space, and includes radiation, conduction, convection, and the measurements of specific and latent heat. Theoretical views are here for the first time introduced. The third and last part relates to the nature of Heat, its sources, and connexion with other properties of matter. In this part Heat is viewed as a kind of energy, and the leading principles by which Heat becomes related to other forms of energy are discussed.
