In a turbulent business environment, leaders must begin to think more broadly about what a corporation is and how it can create a richer future. With the globalisation of the world's economies, the intensification of competition, and quantum leaps in technological development, the insular and static strategic thinking of many global corporations has become inadequate for understanding the business environment and determining strategic direction. This 2006 book provides comprehensive and practical analysis of what sustainable business development (SBD) is and how companies can use it to make a significant difference. Case studies of companies in the US, Europe, the Pacific Rim and South America demonstrate that achieving innovation and integration depends on a comprehensive understanding of all of the forces which drive change and responding to them with fresh ways of strategic thinking. It is compulsory reading for MBA students and executives as well as professional readers.

The way organizations manage entrepreneurship has changed dramatically over the past decade. Today, organizations take account of economic issues, but they also adopt a broader perspective of their purpose including social and environmental issues (i.e. sustainability). Yet, despite its global spread, sustainable entrepreneurship remains an uncertain and poorly defined ambition with few absolutes. This book reaffirms the important need to improve comprehension and explore the subtleties of how individuals, groups, and organizations can discover, create, and seize opportunities for blended value generation, by designing and operating sustainable ventures. It examines, in an interdisciplinary fashion and across sectoral and geographical boundaries, how entrepreneurial activities can be developed to be generally consistent with sustainable development goals, as well as by whom, for what reasons, and with what implications. The Editors comprehensively review key dimensions of the sustainable entrepreneurship phenomenon to establish an essential definition and up-to-date picture of the field. The 19 chapters cover 4 main topics: Understanding the intentions and motivations for sustainable entrepreneurship Fostering and enacting sustainability through entrepreneurial action Leading and inspiring sustainable entrepreneurial action Finding the contextually grounded implications of and challenges to sustainable entrepreneurship and blended value generation This book is an important resource for entrepreneurs and policy makers as well as students in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainability.

The purpose of this paper is to research the meaning of the sustainable development in the innovation economy. Knowledge processes in an innovative economy seem to open up new and varied avenues to be explored in the direction of sustainability. Innovative economic theory in contrast to neoclassical is not derived from the hypothesis that the accumulation of capital is the main driver of economic growth in the knowledge-based economy in the 21st century. This new business logic assumes that the rate of economic growth in the innovation economy depends on the products or services that are incurred as a result of knowledge. The emergence of the internet in the early 90s affected the growth of dot.com online businesses and the emergence of the third wave of capitalism. In the current economic crisis and recession, the consequences of low economic growth will further affect the changes in the global markets. This is reflected in the different behaviors of consumers and resulting in the development of new business models, which includes sustainable development in the innovation economy. The paper examines critical factors that influence the role of new innovative technologies in organizational change to ensure sustainability. Focus on sustainability directs company behavior towards the environmental protection, which presumes the fulfillment of organizational and human needs. Therefore, current demands can be satisfied in the present, but the resources for their fulfillment will be preserved for future generations. In order to realize this goal, the company must invest in assets that provide sustainable development. Thus, it is necessary to be aware of how the final products or processes impact the environment. Assuming that the company complies with sustainable components can be expected to create value added for this item. This added value is not only better society reputation that affects the consumers and, is important for investors but also fulfills the legal obligation. The conceptual paper contributes to the ongoing discussion about the increasingly important role of sustainable development as a major concern for the European Union, companies and NGO's that have to develop the policies that will enable sustainable growth of the society.
