The authors report the latest results on the measurement of inclusive b quark and heavy quarkonium production by the DO collaboration in p[anti p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are from analyses of the 1992--93 data. This report includes measurements of inclusive b quark, J/[psi] and[Upsilon] meson production cross sections. The b quark production cross section, measured in inclusive muon data, is consistent with next to leading order QCD predictions within theoretical and experimental errors. They study J/[psi] and[Upsilon] meson production in dimuon events and perform an investigation of the J/[psi] production mechanisms. Including the latest developments in charmonium phenomenology, the J/[psi] production rates are now almost all accounted for in the transverse momentum range above 8 GeV/c. The observed[Upsilon] production rates, however, are higher than expected by a factor five.

We calculate the O([alpha]3s) short-distance, QCD collinear-factorized coefficient functions for all partonic channels that include the production of a heavy quark pair at short distances. Thus, this provides the first power correction to the collinear-factorized inclusive hadronic production of heavy quarkonia at large transverse momentum, pT, including the full leading-order perturbative contributions to the production of heavy quark pairs in all color and spin states employed in NRQCD treatments of this process. We discuss the role of the first power correction in the production rates and the polarizations of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The consistency of QCD collinear factorization and nonrelativistic QCD factorization applied to heavy quarkonium production is also discussed.

The production of the heavy (c{bar c})-quarkonium, (c{bar b})-quarkonium, and (b{bar b})-quarkonium states [({bar Q}') quarkonium for short], via the W semi-inclusive decays, has been systematically studied within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD. In addition to the two color-singlet S-wave states, we also discuss the production of the four color-singlet P-wave states.

This book focuses on the study of heavy quarkonium production at high-energy colliders as a useful tool to explain both the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of quantum choromodynamics. It provides the first comprehensive comparison between the theory and recent experiments and clarifies some longstanding puzzles in the heavy quarkonium production mechanism. In addition, it describes in detail a new framework for implementing precise computations of the physical observables in quantum field theories based on recently developed techniques. It can be used to simulate the complicated collider environment of the Large Hadron Collider at the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN). Its accomplishment implies that the Monte Carlo simulations for high-energy physics experiments have reached the limits of precision. It offers readers a wealth of valuable information on the relevant techniques.
