This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the HPLC technology and fingerprints of commonly-used Chinese herbs. It contains HPLC fingerprints of over 40 traditional Chinese medicinal herbs and details of their sources, production and quality control. The book provides a practical review of the techniques, relevant materials, and the particular demands for using HPLC in traditional Chinese medicinal herb applications. It also covers HPLC methods used to analyze the herbs.High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is increasingly used in the field of traditional Chinese medicine for obtaining fingerprints of Chinese medicinal herbs. Advantages such as high speed, high resolution, high sensitivity, stability, accuracy, and automation make it one of the leading techniques used for quality control, standardization of planting, and new drug development in traditional Chinese medicine. To date, no other books on HPLC fingerprints of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs have been published in English. This is the first book in English devoted to providing readers with state-of-the-art information on HPLC applied in the analysis of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs.

A characteristic of traditional medicinal practices, such as traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and Indian ayurveda, is the abundant use of plants as drugs. However, the bottleneck in the use of herbal drugs is the control of their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Good quality control (QC) is necessary to achieve the standards of modern medicines. Liquid chromatography, being a powerful universal separation technique, is widely available in laboratories and easily hyphenated with other spectroscopic and biochemical techniques. A number of LC-based strategies—such as multicomponent quantitation, fingerprinting, bioaffinity chromatography, and on-flow assays for screening—have been used for the comprehensive QC of TCMs, lead finding, and identification of active constituents. In this chapter, the applications and development of such LC-based methods for TCMs and other herbal drugs are presented and discussed. Some future trends are given.

This manual, to be published in two volumes, provides a condensed overview of the analytical investigation of 80 Chinese Herbal Drugs which are most frequently in use. Thin layer chromatographic-, high pressure liquid chromatographic- and gas chromatographic-fingerprint analytical techniques allow the detection of all main low-molecular constituents of a plant drug and even single constituents can be visualized. Analytical results thereof are shown in numerous color figures. The quality proof of the investigation meets the standard of the European Drug Regulatory Authority. Furthermore, this volume gives a detailed description of the analytical methods used for several drugs. Bioactive constituents, pharmacological and biological activities of several single herbal drugs as well as their therapeutic applications are discussed.

Aristolochic acid is found to be toxic in nature thereby causing various diseases such as nephrotoxicity. An analytical methodology is employed to detect the presence of Aristolochic Acid-1 in Chinese herbal medicine. 9 different samples were extracted and fingerprinted using HPLC-DAD.Data treatment was performed using SIMCA-P, a chemometric analytical software and the output obtained was transformed into a PLS-DA model which was capable of distinguishing between the samples which contains AA-I and does not. Hence, the study provides evidence of identifying the toxic AA-I in Chinese herbal medicines.
