Emissions of CO2 have come to be regarded as the main factor in climate change in recent years, and how to control them has become a pressing issue. The problem cannot simply be labeled a technological one, however, because it is deeply involved with social and economic issues. Since 2008, the Global Center of Excellence (COE) program titled “Energy Science in the Age of Global Warming—Toward a CO2 Zero-Emission Energy System” has been held at Kyoto University, Japan. The program aims to establish an international education and research platform to foster educators, researchers, and policy makers who can develop technologies and propose policies toward a zero-emission society by the year 2100. Setting out a zero-emission technology roadmap, Global COE promotes socioeconomic studies of energy, the study of new technologies for renewable energies, and research in advanced nuclear energy. A compilation of the lectures and presentations from the first symposium of Global COE held at Kyoto University, this book is intended to provide the impetus for the establishment of low carbon energy science to bring about harmony between mankind and the environment.

Fortunately, we are only required to deal with a very small amount of that vast number in our work and life. As those who devote himself to the field of information technology and management engineering, I sincerely believe that it is our responsibility to make efforts to accelerate the advance of science in such fields. The 2014 international Conference on Information Technology and Management Engineering, thanks to the hard work of its committee, will be held on April 26 and 27 in Hong Kong. The ITME2014 covers a wide range of topics such as network protocols, information theory and coding theory, network security, management theory, project management, public management, knowledge management etc. It is a great honor to us that numerous people from various countries, including many famous experts and excellent researchers, have shown their interest in this convention and submitted their latest studies to us as their support. Among these studies, we have selected about a hundred to be finally included in this proceeding after reviewing and discussing. Data science is proving to be one of the major trends of the second decade of the 21st century. Even though the term was coined by Peter Naur in the mid 1960s as ‘datalogy’, or the science of data, it is in the context of data analytics, and especially of big data, that data science has emerged as the new paradigm. Fuzzy and Crisp strategies are two of the most widespread approaches within the computational intelligence umbrella. This book presents 65 papers from the 3rd International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining (FSDM 2017), held in Hualien, Taiwan, in November 2017. All papers were carefully reviewed by program committee members, who took into consideration the breadth and depth of the research topics that fall within the scope of FSDM. Offering a state-of-the-art overview of fuzzy systems and data mining, the publication will be of interest to all those whose work involves data science.
