Published in 1997, this volume is a result of a number of European Union and Council of Europe initiatives. The major stimulus came from an intensive course held in Lisbon in 1994 as part of two Erasmus networks exploring the nature of intercultural studies on a European-wide basis. Although the concepts of multiculturalism and interculturalism have frequently been discussed within a British context, this book draws on the interlocking and comparative persectives of specialists in education and teacher training in several European countries including Spain, France, Italy, Britain and the Netherlands. Educational policies and theories of identity are compared and there are special sections in multilinguism, teacher training, curriculum development, relationships between different ethnic groups and a vision of the future of intercultural education in Europe. The issues discussed in the book are significant in the development of modern societies as they seek to come to terms with the revolution in intercultural relations brought about by mass communications and global transport. The world is rapidly having to come to terms with cultural and social differences which can no longer be kept separate in their protective groups.

This book examines the status of intercultural education in Chile. It does this through three axes: the first is multidisciplinary, including historical, anthropological, sociological, and pedagogical, to account for varied aspects of the Chilean intercultural education. The second is the consideration of multiple indigenous peoples, analyzing students’ groups or indigenous peoples, such as the Rapa Nui, Aymara, or Mapuche. Finally, the book has a multilevel perspective that recognizes that educational policy involves different actors, from the central government to local communities. The book incorporates study material enriched with the experience and analysis of different perspectives and methodologies of its authors, being useful for understanding intercultural education in the country. It is a versatile resource for understanding this topic, as well as a support for the development of programs and policies. This volume brings together the dynamic discussions and lively debate of intercultural and multicultural education taking place across the world. Contributors take readers to the countries, schools, and nongovernmental agencies where intercultural education and multicultural education, either collectively or singularly, are active (often central) concepts or practices in the daily educational undertaking and discourse of society.

International Perspectives on Intercultural Education offers a comprehensive analysis of intercultural education activity as it is practiced in the countries of Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, England, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Chapters by key scholars and practitioners from these nations inform the reader of current educational practice related to diversity. Each author, responding to a common series of guiding questions, presents: *a brief description of the national educational system in her or his country; *descriptive data on demographics in these countries, including data on various subgroups and subcultures and their experiences with the mainstream educational system; * a discussion of the perceived obstacles to addressing intercultural issues in schools and solutions to overcoming these obstacles; and *a comprehensive analysis of intercultural information on how teacher preparation institutions address intercultural education at the present time. An overall concern of each chapter author is how intercultural approaches can be employed to solve the difficulties faced by both individuals and schools while maintaining the cultural integrity of the child.

Este texto se ha elaborado de forma específica como documento de estudio para la asignatura Educación Intercultural, que forma parte del Plan de Estudios del Grado de Pedagogía impartido por la UNED. La selección de contenidos y el enfoque se derivan de los objetivos, competencias y contenidos propuestos en dicha asignatura, así como de las condiciones propias del estudio a distancia. Al mismo tiempo, esperamos que el libro resulte atractivo para todos los lectores que compartan con nosotras el interés por analizar las complejas interacciones entre diversidad humana y equidad en educación, de forma que contribuyamos de forma efectiva al logro de una sociedad más justa e incluyente. El enfoque intercultural se propone como mirada que nos permite comprender la compleja articulación entre diversidad cultural e igualdad en educación. Se reconoce la diversidad humana como normalidad, se sitúa la diversidad cultural en el foco de la reflexión sobre educación y se asume el compromiso ético del educador por la equidad y la justicia social. La perspectiva intercultural es hermenéutica y práctica, es comunicación y relación entre personas. La educación intercultural no es un modelo a alcanzar, sino una perspectiva, una metáfora que nos permite comprender lo que pensamos, decimos y hacemos en relación con la diversidad cultural y equidad en educación. Lo intercultural no se presenta como adjetivo con el que calificar a profesores, escuelas, programas o recursos, sino que es el enfoque, la mirada intercultural, la que hace el objeto. Lo cultural emana y se construye en la interacción entre las personas. Desde estas premisas, se delimita la educación intercultural, se analizan las implicaciones prácticas de adoptar un enfoque intercultural en educación, y se ofrecen ideas y estrategias con las que revisar y proponer prácticas e investigaciones en educación. El texto se organiza en nueve temas agrupados en tres unidades didácticas dedicadas a: 1. Conceptos básicos, 2. Transformación social, 3. Escenarios. Cada uno de los temas se ha estructurado en torno a siete apartados: “para empezar a pensar”, “introducción”, “información”, “actividades”, “recursos para la práctica”, “enlaces”, “evaluación y referencias”.
