This volume - the first of this series dealing with angiosperms - comprises the treatments of 73 families, representing three major blocks of the dicotyledons: magnoliids, centrosperms, and hamamelids. These blocks are generally recognized as subclasses in modern textbooks and works of reference. We consider them a convenient means for structuring the hundreds of di cotyledon families, but are far from taking them at face value for biological, let alone mono phyletic entities. Angiosperm taxa above the rank of family are little consolidated, as is easily seen when comparing various modern classifications. Genera and families, in contrast, are comparatively stable units -and they are important in practical terms. The genus is the taxon most frequently recognized as a distinct entity even by the layman, and generic names provide the key to all in formation available about plants. The family is, as a rule, homogeneous enough to conve niently summarize biological information, yet comprehensive enough to avoid excessive re dundance. The emphasis in this series is, therefore, primarily on families and genera.

This eighth volume in the comprehensive Illustrated Flora of Illinois series is the seventh volume devoted to flowering plants (the eighth volume is devoted to ferns) and the second treating dicotyledons, which include such well-known plants as roses, peas, mustards, mints, nightshades, milkweeds, and asters. The previous volume on dicots, Flowering Plants: Hollies to Loasas, was published in 1978. In the present volume, Mohlenbrock includes three orders of vascular plants encompassing five families. The orders are Salicales and Tamaricales, of the Salicaceae and Tamaricaceae families, and Capparidales, of the Capparidaceae, Resedaceae, and Brassicaceae families. In all, 44 genera and 117species are treated in this volume, each species illustrated in detail.

The Flora of the Marquesas Islands is a complete account of all of the plants found in the Marquesas Islands. Of the total 835 vascular plant species recorded for the Marquesas Islands, approximately 504 are aliens introduced by humans over the years, including 257 cultivated, 33 Polynesian introductions, and 214 other naturalized species, compared to the native flora of 331 species. This is a collaborative project between the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Délégation à la Recherche de la Polynésie française intended to further knowledge of the flora of this remote archipelago. Based on extensive fieldwork this book covers the extant floristic diversity, including 85 recently described species, and provides original illustrations, illuminating photos, and critical conservation considerations. This work imparts a foundational knowledge of the flora as a vital component towards preserving the biodiversity of the Marquesas Islands. This is the second and final volume of the Flora of the Marquesas Islands. Volume 1 comprised the introductory chapters, Lycophytes, Ferns, and Monocots, and Exsiccatae for those groups (Lorence & Wagner 2019). Volume 2 comprises the Dicots in the traditional sense (basal angiosperms plus the eudicots), Cultivated Species Appendix, Literature Cited, Exsiccatae, and Index for both volumes.
