The complex and coherent development of Japanese art during the course of the nineteenth century was inadvertently disrupted by a political event: the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Scholars of both the preceding Edo (1615–1868) and the succeeding Meiji (1868–1912) eras have shunned the decades bordering this arbitrary divide, thus creating an art-historical void that the former view as a period of waning technical and creative inventiveness and the latter as one threatened by Meiji reforms and indiscriminate westernization and modernization. Challenging Past and Present, to the contrary, demonstrates that the period 1840–1890, as seen progressively rather than retrospectively, experienced a dramatic transformation in the visual arts, which in turn made possible the creative achievements of the twentieth century. The first group of chapters takes as its theme the diverse cultural currents of the transitional period, particularly as they applied to art.The second section deals with the inconsistent yet determinedly pragmatic courses pursed by artists, entrepreneurs, and patrons to achieve a secure footing in the uncertain terrain of early Meiji. Further chapters look at how painters and sculptors sought to absorb and integrate foreign influences and reinterpret their own stylistic mediums.

Gary Rhodes, Ph.D. Professor and Chair of the Graduate Education Division, College of Education California State University at Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), United States Lisa Loberg, Ed.D. Associate Director of Exchange and Study Away Art Center College of Design in Southern California, United States ABSTRACT This chapter provides a retrospective examination of international education and how Study Abroad in particular has developed and changed over the past 30 years. Study Abroad has gone from having very little administrative or budgetary support to featuring prominently in college mission statements and admission brochures. A body of growing research now supports its beneficial outcomes and contributions to the college experience and beyond. Included in this chapter is a summary of its past, current and future challenges and suggestions of ways enhanced Study Abroad programming might look in the future, including greater connection to the Olympic Movement, University International Athletics, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Above all, the authors contend that Study Abroad should be enhanced, supported and celebrated, as it continues to be an important educational tool in fostering international peace and cross-cultural understanding. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. More than eighty countries are involved. Containing numerous exercises, illustrations, hints and solutions, presented in a lucid and thought-provoking style, this text provides a wide range of skills required in competitions such as the Mathematical Olympiad. More than fifty problems in Euclidean geometry involving integers and rational numbers are presented. Early chapters cover elementary problems while later sections break new ground in certain areas and are a greater challenge for the more adventurous reader. The text is ideal for Mathematical Olympiad training and also serves as a supplementary text for students in pure mathematics, particularly number theory and geometry. Dr. Christopher Bradley was formerly a Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics at Jesus College, Oxford, Deputy Leader of the British Mathematical Olympiad Team and for several years Secretary of the British Mathematical Olympiad Committee.

This edited volume on international development is a collection of papers presented at the international postgraduate conference “Development: What Now?” in Hong Kong from the 9th to 11th October 2014. With the support of the Postgraduate Students Conference Grant of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, this conference was organised by the Department of Applied Social Science of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The conference aimed to contribute in answering the vital question for the future of development studies: “What Now?” The conference explored some of the past, present and future challenges in international development. It was a grand success attracting over 60 participants from Germany, Indonesia, Canada, Italy, India, Poland, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, Nigeria, Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, the UK and Hong Kong. The participants presented their research papers on ten major themes. These included (1) Empowering People, Climate Change and Education; (2) Poverty Reduction; (3) Gender Studies; (4) Human Rights, Environment and Wellbeing; (5) Foreign Aid and Development Cooperation; (6) Security and Transnationality; (7) Economic Development; (8) Urban and Rural Development; (9) Governance, Diplomacy and Health in Development; (10) Sociology and Diversity in Psychology, Literature and Advertising.
