This volume is focused on subjects related to cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injuries after acute stroke. All chapters are selected from the Sixth Elite Stroke meeting named Pangu Stroke Conference and written by members of world leading laboratories of stroke studies. The contents cover both clinical and bench studies, from basic components of cerebral arterial system to clinical reperfusion injury cases, from reperfusion caused programmed cell death and astrocyte activation to oxidative stress and nitric oxide after reperfusion, from extracellular matrix and inflammation to a role of diabetes after reperfusion, from small artery disorders to collateral circulation and blood pressure control after reperfusion. Wei-Jian Jiang, Chairman of New Era Stroke Care and Research Institute of PLA Rocket Force General Hospital, Beijing, China. Wengui Yu, Professor and Director of Comprehensive Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center, University of California, Irvine Yan Qu, Professor and Director of Neurosurgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University, Xi’an, China. Zhongsong Shi, Professor of Neurosurgery at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China. Ben-yan Luo, Professor and Chair of Neurology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University. John H. Zhang, Professor of Anesthesiology and Physiology at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Loma Linda, CA, USA.

Restitution of blood flow in the ischemic region helps liberate cells from mortification in any tissue or organ. Reperfusion post cerebral ischemia worsen the condition and lead to ,Äúcerebral reperfusion injury,Äù. In cerebral reperfusion injury, significant changes observed are infarct size, behavioural deficits, hematoma formation, inflammatory mediators, and oxidative stress markers representing the extent of brain injury. Experimental In vivo models mimicking pathological and neurological processes are key tools in researching cerebral reperfusion injury and potential therapeutic agents,Äô development. This review explains currently used In vivo models like middle cerebral artery occlusion model, emboli stroke model, two-vessel occlusion model of forebrain ischemia, four-vessel occlusion model of forebrain ischemia, photochemical stroke model, collagenase induced brain haemorrhage model, autologous whole blood induced haemorrhage model. This review provides contemplative facts to setup authentic and relevant animal models to study cerebral reperfusion injury.

The World Stroke Organization reports that “stroke has already reached epidemic proportions. Globally1 in 4 adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. 12.2 million people worldwide will have their first stroke this year, and 6.5 million will die as a result.” Ischemic strokes are the most common type of stroke, with about 87% of all strokes being ischemic strokes. This new volume addresses this epidemic by presenting detailed studies on ischemic injury, with emphasis on the molecular-level mechanisms and the role of signaling pathways in the body, their structure, and their mechanism of action. The book focuses on molecular pharmacology plans and explains the new areas of research on the discovery of therapeutic molecules that can be used for combating this life-threatening disease. The authors discuss stroke occurrence at different stages of life as well as sex-based differences in its treatment. They cover aspects of the clinical treatment and diagnosis of patients with cardiovascular events, including in-depth information on the prevention, evaluation, therapy selection, result projection, and long-term course of the disease in affected patients. They also detail the involvement of platelets, neurotransmitters, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and vitamin D in ischemic injury.
