Madison tossed and turned as the nightmare came to life again. Billy was standing in front of her with his fist coming straight for her face. She threw her arms up but it didn't help. The pain of the impact splintered through her head as she loses her balance. She felt herself fall back on the end table and then to the floor. Her back came alive with the burning pain from the impact. She tried to scream “NO!” but was crying so hard and was so scared that she'd just make him madder. Madison prayed his rampage was over and he would just leave but instead he kicks her in the ribs as she crawls to get away. Madison heard her ribs break. The pain was so sever she thought she'd died. Through the pain and her own cries she could hear Billy yelling. “You will never belong to anyone else. You can't leave me, you'll die first.” Madison was so confused on how someone she had dated for years could change so quickly. It had to be the drugs. She tried to help him but he refused. She knew she had to leave him before their relationship got worse. Madison was forced back to reality with the pain of Billy jerking her up by her hair. Billy yelled something at her but Madison couldn't understand for she was losing consciences. He then threw her to the floor and began kicking her again. She tried to block the kicks with her arms and legs but it hurt too badly. Then he kicked her in the back of the head. She lost conscience as her world went black. The smell of smoke woke her from her black world. The pain ravished her body and she instantly wished she was dead. Madison looked around at flames engulfing the living room. She decided there must be a reason she awoke and that's to live not to die. Even though the pain was more then she could stand she made her way to the bathroom, away from the flames. She waits as long as she could to make sure Billy was gone before she tries to make her escape. After what seamed like forever she painfully made her way out the window.

On January 20, 2003, at 10:45 a.m., a massive avalanche in the Selkirk Range of British Columbia struck three members of two guided backcountry skiing groups and buried them. After a frantic hour of digging by those still standing, an unthinkable outcome became reality: seven people were dead. The tragedy made international news, splashing photos of the seven dead Canadian and US skiers on television screens and newspaper pages. The official analysis was that guide error was not a contributing factor in the accident. This interpretation was insufficient for some of the victims’ families, the public and some members of the guiding community. Buried is the assistant guide’s story. It renders an answerable truth about what happened by delving deep into the human factors that played into putting people in harm’s way as well as the peace that comes from accountability and the personal growth that results from understanding.
