Excerpt from Analytical Geometry for Beginners:, The Straight Line and Circle, Vol. 1 This little book is an attempt to simplify a subject which the majority of boys find unusually difficult. It is intended partly for young boys with some mathematical taste, and partly for those who have to get up a little for military and other examinations, but who do not intend to pursue their studies farther than is necessary for these examinations. With these objects, the explanations have been made very full, but all reference to oblique coordinates and to transformations has been postponed to the last chapter. Excerpt from Elements of Analytic Geometry This book is intended for beginners. As beginners generally find great difficulty in comprehending the connection between a locus and its equation, the Opening chapter is devoted mainly to an attempt, by means of easy illustrations and examples, to make this connection clear. Each chapter abounds in exercises; for it is only by solving problems which require some degree of original thought that any real mastery of the study can be gained. The more difficult propositions have been put at the ends of the chapters, under the heading of Supplementary Propositions. This arrangement makes it possible for every teacher to mark out his own course. The simplest course will be Chapters I. - III. And Chapters V. - VII., with Review Exercises and Supplementary Propositions left out. Between this course and the entire work the teacher can exercise his choice, and take just so much as time and circumstances will allow. The author has gathered his materials from many sources, but he is particularly indebted to the English treatise of charles smith. Special acknowledgment is due to G. A. Hill, a.m., of Cambridge, Mass, and to Prof. J. M. Taylor, Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, for assistance in the preparation of the book. Excerpt from A Treatise on Analytical Geometry Branch has been illustrated by problems, intended to test the student's knowledge of the principles demonstrated. The method of treating tangents, normals, subtangents, and subnormals, has been much abridged, and, it is believed, correspondingly improved. Much care has been bestowed on the discussion of the general equation of the second de gree, particularly with respect to the methods of testing the nature of the different -curves that are represented by it.
